It’s funny to me the questions people ask me that I never feel like I have a great answer for…like in college for example I was a Philosophy major. Upon hearing this people’s first question is ALWAYS “So who is your favorite philosopher?” Well folks, I studied logic, and don’t have a favorite philosopher….I’ve yet to find an answer that seems to satisfy the asker. Another one of those questions I get fairly frequently is…”So how did you get started with photography?” Me, “well I’ve always loved taking pictures….ever since I was a child I’ve had a camera in my hand….” Ugh, I hate sounding like every other photographer you’ve ever met. Here’s a part of the story that rarely gets told. When I was in grade school I thought that senior pictures for high school were pretty much the coolest thing under the sun. And I loved taking pictures. Okay, we’ve established that bit? My absolute favorite thing was to play “senior pictures” with my friends and dress them up in a bunch of different outfits and take pictures all over the house and yard in different poses. So I guess really that’s how you could say I got started. I didn’t even think about it as a future job….just something I loved doing…and something I had so much fun playing at with friends.
So the first real senior pictures I took were for my sister Betsy when she was graduating from high school. I took them with a point and shoot camera. And actually, considering I had no real working knowledge of light to work with…I still think they were pretty good. Here we are, four years later, and my gorgeous sister is graduating from college! I’m so excited to celebrate next steps with her as she continues on for her master’s! Please note, these are not with my parents’ point and shoot ;-)Â
