Q2 Checking in on Goals

Hello! I hope you survived all the April fools trickery :-) I cannot believe we’re already into the second quarter of 2012! Can you? I just wanted to stay accountable and check in with you all for my goals for the year…and nudge myself along in the right direction of getting things done.

As far as business goals go……

I. Maintain my business and marketing plan for the year. Yes an actual written, month-by-month plan. This is on track financially so far, but marketing-wise I have kind of derailed a little bit. I need to sit down again and revisit what I want my marketing to look like! I need to make sure I’m in front of and finding the right couples that just jive with me as well as married couples for Beloved sessions!!

II. Rock at surprising my clients and surpassing their every expectation (good surprises only). YES!  I love this part of my job.

III. Shoot 20 weddings this year. I have completed four weddings as of this weekend for 2012 and have another eighteen scheduled! Looks like we’re on track :-)

IV. Get my packaging branded and simplified. UH OH, I’ve been caught. I need to do this. I have taken steps toward this! I found a company I think I really like at the tradeshow in Vegas. Now I just need to actually order things from them….

V. Better engage my audience –> Triple my monthly online traffic and commenting. I need to go check my Google Analytics, but I know we’re building in the right direction :-) I definitely tried to nudge along with the “Let’s Chat” post a couple weeks ago. I know you’re out there! Say hello in the comments every once-in-a-while ;-)

VI. Hire an awesome team to make an Emilia Jane Photography video! DONE! I cannot wait to bring Chadwick and his beautiful wife Chaili out from California in June :-) I am so excited about this.

VII. Write a viral post Still needs to be done. No ideas on this one yet :-)

VIII. Submit at least one wedding/session per month for a blog/magazine feature! I have started submitting! More progress coming soon!

IX. Better define and streamline my style. I think the biggest thing I need to do with this is just keep shooting. Every session I feel a little bit more in tune with how I want everything to piece together to best represent the couple’s love and my style. I think Matt & Tiffany’s Beloved session a few weeks ago really pushed me in the right direction! I can’t wait to show you all pictures from this last weekends wedding too :-)

X. Talk more about my WHY :-D and pour my heart into this and into you all! Much progress can be made here. I think it’s a lot easier to show/share my joy in person…but I have no idea how this comes across online :-/

XI. Start video blogging Dun dun dun. A few of my photographer friends have just started a 30 day vlogging challenge, to video blog 30 days in a row…I think this might just be the kick in the pants I need to at least do a couple and test the waters :-)

XII. Rock married couple’s worlds with my new Beloved sessions (announcement coming soon!!) Yes! Yes! Yes! I am so in love with celebrating marriage years and years after the wedding :-) If you are married, or know married couples who might be interested, please send them my way :-)

Personal Goals and New Years Resolutions! Can I just get a collective “whew” that we made it through business goals. That honestly wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be! Lots to do…but this is always true :-) I’m nervous moving forward though…this probably isn’t going to be pretty.

I. Have a regular quiet time. Hmmmm welllllllll regular. Let’s define regular? No two-ways about this, I’m not on top of it. I am so thankful for my beautiful friend KT, we’re reading through Paul’s letters together and keeping each other on track. Now if only I could carve out time *every* day….

II. Build into my marriage with Wil and into him as a person! We’ll have to check with Wil on this one, but we’re definitely growing together! I definitely should be more encouraging though :-/

III. Master meal planning, eating local and clean. Hmmmm meal planning you say? I think this would require being at home to *make* dinner regularly. I’m definitely trying. And I think we’re making progress! I need to stop celebrating and thinking it’s okay to eat brownies for dinner…

IV. Dress up more! Yes! I love this.

V. Read more, for business and for fun! Yes! Recent reads from this last monthand prior to that! Are you on Goodreads? Add me as a friend!

VI. Floss five days a week.  I won’t lie. I haven’t done this. Not even close. Alright, Q2 let’s make it easier, let’s say floss 2x a week. I’m going to try to start slowly and build up ;-) fingers crossed!

VII. Hire cleaning people.  I just received contact info for a lovely woman from friends, now I just need to call her…..You’d think I would have done this faster!

VIII. Simplify our home style and make it work for us. Progress is being made. And eventually I will successfully decorate the living/meeting room! Hopefully before Chadwick comes out in June to film the promo video :-)

IX. Spend my weeknights wisely Some weeks go well with this…others not so much. But in general I feel like I’m on the right track. Especially in comparison to last year! My goal for sure is to spend more quality time at home with Wil in the evenings :-)

X. Mentor someone Calling for potential mentees! Let me know if you want to talk :-)

XI. Get our finances in order. Well taxes are certainly pushing us in the right direction here…baby steps….baby steps…

XII. Pursue joy in everything! YES! I need this as a daily reminder!

….If you’re still here…thanks for making it through! Please feel free to kick my butt in gear on these :-) I promise tomorrow’s post is beautiful wedding pictures! But really I want to ask about your goals for the year. Are you on track? Can I help encourage you in some way? Happy Monday!! XXOO

The FIX Chicago

This Wednesday I was so honored to help out with Jasmine Star’s Chicago stop for her FIX tour. It was so fun to spend the day with friends! And catch up with newer friends from Showit United/WPPI.

Playing Marilyn Monroe…it was a really windy day!!

We formed a girl band ;-) Picture from Lauren‘s camera!

The lovely Ashley Goodwin introduced Jasmine and MC’ed the evening!

I need to find her necklace!!!

I went into the evening so excited about helping out and hanging out with friends, that I completely forgot WHY we were all getting together in the first place….and didn’t bring a notebook. Hopefully I didn’t look too rude taking notes on my phone! Change keeps you hungry. Change keeps you scared. Change keeps you humble.

Q&A Was great :-) Plus can I just say we had a surprisingly well dressed crowd!

All of us “FIXers” at the end of the night… picture taken by JD on Christy’s camera :-)

So good to make new friends and hang out with old ones!! XXOO

In Bed with Sue

The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome, and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf, the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.
© Derek Walcott

This poem is written in the entry to Sue Bryce’s studio. Don’t you want to plaster it on your walls?!

Today, tomorrow, and Sunday Sue Bryce is on Creative Live. If you are a photographer, you should watch.

I had not heard of Sue until the WPPI Road Trip here in Chicago last August. If you’ve been to a WPPI Road Trip stop, it isn’t like the big WPPI (that I just got back from), there aren’t a lot of different rooms with different classes to choose from. It’s one big room, all day, with fabulous speakers, and another room with a mini-tradeshow.

Scott & Adina Haynes introduced Sue as the first speaker of the day. In that 60 minutes I took three full pages of notes and was both inspired and convicted in a big way. She asked for a show of hands in the room for who had a WRITTEN 12-MONTH BUSINESS/MARKETING PLAN. One hand. In the whole entire room. And if you’re guessing it was not mine, you would be correct. I sat stunned. This wasn’t fluffy inspirational non-sense. This woman knew her business and I had better listen up. Sue is a glamour photographer from Australia (and their Number 1 Portrait Photographer of the year for 2010). But I am here to say that what she teaches is applicable for ANY PHOTOGRAPHY BUSINESS. Probably any business frankly.

After hearing her speak that first time I started religiously following her blog (InBedWithSue.com //Yes that’s why today’s post is titled as such…I think it’s catchy ;-) ). And found out she was coming back to Chicago for a Masters class (workshop) in September. Sixteen pages of notes, and a wealth of knowledge later I can tell you that your time spent watching her this weekend will be time well spent.

It isn’t just the notes you take though, it’s what you DO with them! After I heard Sue speak for the first time I took a whole afternoon to write my first business and marketing plan. Thirteen months of marketing strategies. Ten goals for the year. And twenty ideas. When was the last time you sat and physically wrote out your business and marketing plan? (No guilt trip intended, and cheers to you if you have it done ;-) ) When I walked into her masters class I had a plan. Or at least I thought I did.

She taught me that you can’t market yourself until you define your style. That I should make goals for amount of work, not money. To educate before even thinking about selling. And then educate again. That people connect with WHY you do what you do. She wants to photograph every woman who has ever looked into the mirror and not felt good enough. Yes. Read it again if you need to. To photograph every woman who has ever looked into the mirror and not felt good enough. If that isn’t compelling, I don’t know what is.

The workshop was one day of business and one day of posing and editing. I’m guessing this weekend will breakdown somewhat similarly, but it is ALL worth your while. I promise.

Because most posts are better with pictures, these are a few I took during the masters class…yes we shopped during lunch…no I didn’t buy anything.

What are you waiting for??? Go watch!!!

And have a wonderful weekend of course!! XXOO

New Customizable Client Websites!

In the trend of last week’s album post I am so thrilled to share this feature off! All of my 2012 (and beyond) couples receive a beautiful completely customizable site with their names in the URL just like this one I just made for Kyle & Megan. You can see theirs at http://kyleandmegan.emiliajanephotography.com

You can share your story!

Announce wedding details :-)

Show off engagement pictures!

Share registry information ;-)

And then your guests know where to come back for the wedding pictures after!

Eek! So exciting! I have to thank Joshua Moorhead of PinkSlip Industries for pulling these together for me using the beautiful design elements Ravyn of 315 originally built into my site.

This is just the first, so if you’ve already booked me for 2012 I promise your site is coming soon!! I can’t wait to hear what you all think :-D

WPPI & Showit United 2012

Sitting down now to write this post I’m having a really hard time finding the words to convey the awesomeness of last week. All I can really tell you is that this is going to be a really long post, and to get a coffee first.

For the first full 24 hours I felt like I was just trying to get the ground under me. This trip that I  had been dreaming about for months was finally here. I was IN VEGAS. Sunday is kind of a blur. I was picked up by the awesome Showit guys at the airport and rode back to the MGM Signature in the FIX bus. I threw back a beer with Krisd like I known her my whole life even though we’d just met 30 minutes prior. Sunday evening I attended a buffet dinner at the Cosmopolitan with 100+ other Showiteers. It was so incredible to have all of that joy in one room. So many hugs all around, and so many awkward pauses trying to match the person to the profile picture. And then Monday morning I started in with the classes. I can tell you now I definitely tried to do too much (I’m sure you’re shocked). That day I heard David Jay, Mike Larson, Gabriel Ryan, The Grovers, and Jose Villa speak. This next bit of advice applies to any future conference attendees. Yes, any conference. Know why you’re going, and what you want to learn before you go. Write it down. Strategically select your classes/workshops/things to attend based on that. It is way too easy to be pulled all over the place thinking you’re going to learn a lot just because you’re hearing “successful” people speak.

Just one thing I want to share with you from Monday that David Jay said. It’s an old Hindu word, Genshai (no idea if I’m spelling this correctly) which means to never treat someone in a ways that would make them feel small. I’m sure this will be it’s own blog post at some point. But I am so honored to be a part of a group that strives for this.

Tuesday I knew would be a good day because the barista spelled my name correctly. That morning I met up with Khara Plicanic for a Thirst Relief Mentoring Session over breakfast. I didn’t have a lot of big things written down that I wanted to learn from her. But she’s just so awesome I learned anyway! She helped me articulate a lot of things I had been feeling but didn’t know how to best put into words. Things I want for my business, ways to structure packages, how to talk things through with brides. I didn’t write while I was there with her but I went back time after time all week jotting things down that resonated with me from our conversation.

Tuesday I heard Jasmine Star, Karen Stott, and Mike Colon speak. What I loved most about that day though was the evening. I attended the Pursuit 31 Soiree at the Palms Place Penthouse with 50+ other fabulous women and we ate cheese, prayed (like woah these women can pray powerfully….it is a BEAUTIFUL thing) and took super fun pictures of each other. This is probably the event I am most sad that I didn’t bring my camera to. Thankfully others did, and Katrina Miller of Reece & Katrina captured these of me.

Eek! So fun!!

I’m doing my best to talk through my experiences and not just the pictures I took. One of the absolute biggest things of the whole week was meeting so many incredible people, and building relationships with people I already know and love. As Jackie said yesterday, next year I need to get a picture with every single person I hug. Sadly, I didn’t do that. But you can see me below with the darling Christy Tyler and my roommate for the week the effervescent Tamara Lockwood. LOVE them both. A huge person for me though that I don’t have a picture with is Kat Harris. Kat works with Mike Colon, you can see her blog here. I comment on her blog semi-frequently and I was really hoping to meet her. After hearing J*’s keynote I spotted her on the other side of the room and marched up to introduce myself. You guys, she KNEW WHO I WAS! And she hugged me. And she asked me about how I got started with wedding photography. And we talked about what an amazing God thing it was and how she ended up working with Mike. I don’t think I can put this in bold enough terms. Taking the time to really talk with people will always make a bigger impact than you think. When you show people that you value them, they will respect you. I only hope I can display this same genuine care in every aspect of my own life.

This next picture is from Christy that Amanda took for us. I would absolutely be remiss if I didn’t mention how incredibly wonderful it was to meet and get to spend time with these fabulous APW ladies: Emily, Katie, Christy, Allison. You are each so incredible. I can’t wait to spend more time with each of you!

Wednesday morning my iPhone charger died so I needed to run to the Apple store. This was incredible for my sanity (just getting outside and walking in the sunshine) and completely fortuitous timing. I had a mentoring session set up with Justin & Mary Marantz originally scheduled for Tuesday, we’d moved it to Wednesday, and Mary emailed while I was walking to Ceasar’s Palace Forum Shopppes to say they had an elopement come up for THAT NIGHT and could we reschedule for Thursday morning. Also, did I want to second shoot the wedding with them. I’m pretty sure my response was something like “YES AND YES!!!!!! And what perfect timing because I’m on my way to the Forum Shoppes now and I can get a wedding appropriate dress.” I’m that professional. I literally emailed her back about shopping. Clearly I wasn’t thinking straight.

This is from my walk :-)

I got a charger, found a dress as quickly as possible, and power walked back to the Signature to hear Jeff Jochum‘s keynote. I think I took more notes during his 35 minutes talking than I did during any of the two hour platform classes. He talked about our why in business and in life, about the state of the professional photography industry, taught us how to test the power of our positioning. I could go on and on.

From Jeff’s talk I sprinted up to the room to change and then to Justin and Mary’s platform room to help them set up. Mary’s talk was INCREDIBLE. Truly inspiring. She talked about dreaming big and doing bigger. And boy oh boy did I walk out of there with things to ponder. No time then though! I sprinted up to the room to change for the WEDDING and snapped this picture of the sunset before dashing out the door. I cannot thank Lauren enough for loaning me her 50mm and Joe for loaning me his shootsac.

The wedding was beautiful and I’m just showing this itty bitty Instagram sneak peek for now because I haven’t talked to Justin & Mary about using the pictures yet :-) It was SUCH an honor to be included in Ashley & Jeremy’s wedding.

Thursday morning I got up bright and early to meet Justin & Mary for my mentoring session. And let me just tell you, Mary rocked my world. We talked about my why, and my big hairy audacious goals. We talked about the business I want to build, and then we talked about achieving it. Big changes are coming, and I could not possibly be more thrilled! :-D

Please pardon the awful hilarity of this picture and just take it as documentation that I did in fact see the sunshine while in Vegas and that I am in fact friends with Lauren and Stacy. Also as a word of warning NOT to schedule a super late flight out…you’ll end up waiting for hours and hours and taking silly pictures like the one above.

A g&t on the flight and I was finally home.  Completely exhausted. And each day since I’ve felt just a little bit less like a truck ran over my body. It’s not gone yet, but I’m thinking by this weekend…hopefully.

I cannot wait for next year. (I’m bringing Wil with me for sure!)

Flushmount Album Goodness (And the Importance of your Memories)

I can’t believe I’ve waited so long to share this goodness with you! Today I am thrilled to show off my very first sample album. I have more now, but since I ordered this once first I’m sharing it with you all first!  This is a 20 page 10″x10″ black leather album from KISS. And I adore it. This is my entry level flushmount album, and I’ve already sold more of this album than any others :-) It’s the perfect size I think if you don’t want a huge album, it has amazing thick pages that still magically lay flat, AND you get an adorable fabric slip cover with it!

I custom design the whole album, email it to you for approval (you can swap out a few pictures and have the option to add more pages) and then I send it off to print! It’s easy to include albums with booking, or decide after your wedding. And you get a discount when you order multiple copies! (Moms LOVE these.)

I’m definitely not a photographer who will push you into printing tons of things. But if you’re going to print one thing from your wedding, it should be an album. It is so much better to hold and feel the weight of these memories in your hands than clicking through a series of images on a computer screen. When you leave everything online it’s like leaving the negatives unprinted. Essentially without printing, you’re paying me for a really expensive facebook album. I kind of want to backspace that because I know it’s kind of harsh….but it’s true. I know printing isn’t cheap, but this has to be seen as an investment into your memories and family heirlooms. For you, your family, and future hypothetical children. Rant over, I love you guys. And like I said at the top, I don’t ever want to be salesy with this, I don’t want to push you. But I do believe your memories are more important than an online gallery could ever display.

Until tomorrow, XXOO

Coming Soon

Last night I had my first meeting with Chadwick Trentham about a really exciting project coming soon for Emilia Jane Photography! And by soon I mean in several months…but I’m so excited about it I had to blog about it immediately. And really I’m kind of jumping the gun because I haven’t officially hired him yet…but I plan to send him the check as soon as we find a weekend that works to fly him and his beautiful wife Chaili out from Azusa, California. What is all this fuss you might ask????!?!?!? We’re going to make a promo video! For me! For Emilia Jane Photography! I’m really excited for tons of reasons, and instead of starting a new board I’m going to just keep adding on to my first branding inspiration Pinterest board which is right over here. If you aren’t on Pinterest already, you should absolutely join, it’s such a fun way to keep notes of things all over the internet! And build gorgeous inspiration boards too…

I won’t lie, I’m kind of obsessed with these videos, and I can’t have one that displays my personality to potential clients on the internet everywhere!

These are just a few of my favorites from photographers all over!
Jamie Delaine out of Vancouver
Justin & Mary in Connecticut
Scarlett Loves Stephen in Florida
Brandon and Jess out of Ontario
Valentina Glidden in California (she is how I found Chadwick!)
and most recently my dear friend Lauren Wakefield! Right here in Chicago :-)

I cannot wait to have more to share about this exciting project!! Do you have favorite videos?? Link them in the comments! I want to see :-D

Blessings!

Last night I got to meet with such an incredible group of local photographers! It was the first of what promises to be a hilarious, educational, awesome, monthly meet-up. We’re all Showiteers (which means we use Showit portfolio websites…you can see mine right here ;-) and what’s almost more fun than the actual websites and ease of using them, is the community that comes along with Showit. We have an active Facebook group full of people will to help each other learn and grow! And that’s exactly how I felt last night. Like I was surrounded by people who weren’t there to judge but wanted to help me succeed! We talked about goals and aspirations. We talked about wine and healthy food substitutes. We talked about things friends talk about! I believe it is crucial in whatever you do to surround yourself with people you can encourage and pour into you, and that you can do the same for them. And I have found it!!! I am so incredibly blessed.

Thank you a million times over for hosting, Lauren. You are an absolute dear and I am so thrilled to have you as a friend in my life!!!

Also, isn’t Goose, her pug the absolute cutest thing ever!??!?! :-D XXOO
