Before I got married I emailed several married women that I respect asking for their prayer and marriage advice on the way in. I knew I was committed to him, but I also knew we weren’t necessarily going to like each other every day. Being the kind of person that plans and makes lists, I requested their words of wisdom. I can’t tell you what a huge amazing blessing this was. Every time I go back and read any of their responses it fills my heart with joy.
One of the biggest surprise frustrations Wil and I have had to work through (and still do) is that our down-time activities, how we relax and kick back, are totally different. I know this doesn’t sound like a big deal, but when both partners are workaholics who have a hard time walking away from the computer…there isn’t a lot of spare time to divy up between the activities that each of us enjoys (and still have any time together–especially when the other partner doesn’t enjoy/relax with said activity). The thing we can always both agree on though is food (and travel–but that adds up fast!)..this is a big part of why so much of our “off” time is around food/drink events!
Several of my respected council of women talked about the idea of a date night, or date days. Now, not only are Wil and I both certifiable workaholics, our “off” time doesn’t typically line up. He’s off Saturday & Sunday, and most of my shoots are on the weekend. So for now, we plan date time. Dinners as frequently as possible, evenings on the couch watching TV when we can (this is my preferred method of relaxation), whole days when we both aren’t working. This time is so precious. And for the record, we are trying to spend time on activities that may not be our first choice if it’s important to our spouse. Wil is MUCH better at this than I am. But hello! Obviously watching movies on the couch is way more relaxing than going out to shows ;-)
Anyway, these are pictures from the two year anniversary event for Uber in Chicago at the RM Champagne Salon. I’d been dying to go there for ages so this was the perfect opportunity for Wil and I to have some time together, and to capture the fun space!
Happy Tuesday everyone! Wish me luck tonight as we head to a show Wil’s really excited about ;-)
