New Customizable Client Websites!

In the trend of last week’s album post I am so thrilled to share this feature off! All of my 2012 (and beyond) couples receive a beautiful completely customizable site with their names in the URL just like this one I just made for Kyle & Megan. You can see theirs at http://kyleandmegan.emiliajanephotography.com

You can share your story!

Announce wedding details :-)

Show off engagement pictures!

Share registry information ;-)

And then your guests know where to come back for the wedding pictures after!

Eek! So exciting! I have to thank Joshua Moorhead of PinkSlip Industries for pulling these together for me using the beautiful design elements Ravyn of 315 originally built into my site.

This is just the first, so if you’ve already booked me for 2012 I promise your site is coming soon!! I can’t wait to hear what you all think :-D

WPPI & Showit United 2012

Sitting down now to write this post I’m having a really hard time finding the words to convey the awesomeness of last week. All I can really tell you is that this is going to be a really long post, and to get a coffee first.

For the first full 24 hours I felt like I was just trying to get the ground under me. This trip that I  had been dreaming about for months was finally here. I was IN VEGAS. Sunday is kind of a blur. I was picked up by the awesome Showit guys at the airport and rode back to the MGM Signature in the FIX bus. I threw back a beer with Krisd like I known her my whole life even though we’d just met 30 minutes prior. Sunday evening I attended a buffet dinner at the Cosmopolitan with 100+ other Showiteers. It was so incredible to have all of that joy in one room. So many hugs all around, and so many awkward pauses trying to match the person to the profile picture. And then Monday morning I started in with the classes. I can tell you now I definitely tried to do too much (I’m sure you’re shocked). That day I heard David Jay, Mike Larson, Gabriel Ryan, The Grovers, and Jose Villa speak. This next bit of advice applies to any future conference attendees. Yes, any conference. Know why you’re going, and what you want to learn before you go. Write it down. Strategically select your classes/workshops/things to attend based on that. It is way too easy to be pulled all over the place thinking you’re going to learn a lot just because you’re hearing “successful” people speak.

Just one thing I want to share with you from Monday that David Jay said. It’s an old Hindu word, Genshai (no idea if I’m spelling this correctly) which means to never treat someone in a ways that would make them feel small. I’m sure this will be it’s own blog post at some point. But I am so honored to be a part of a group that strives for this.

Tuesday I knew would be a good day because the barista spelled my name correctly. That morning I met up with Khara Plicanic for a Thirst Relief Mentoring Session over breakfast. I didn’t have a lot of big things written down that I wanted to learn from her. But she’s just so awesome I learned anyway! She helped me articulate a lot of things I had been feeling but didn’t know how to best put into words. Things I want for my business, ways to structure packages, how to talk things through with brides. I didn’t write while I was there with her but I went back time after time all week jotting things down that resonated with me from our conversation.

Tuesday I heard Jasmine Star, Karen Stott, and Mike Colon speak. What I loved most about that day though was the evening. I attended the Pursuit 31 Soiree at the Palms Place Penthouse with 50+ other fabulous women and we ate cheese, prayed (like woah these women can pray powerfully….it is a BEAUTIFUL thing) and took super fun pictures of each other. This is probably the event I am most sad that I didn’t bring my camera to. Thankfully others did, and Katrina Miller of Reece & Katrina captured these of me.

Eek! So fun!!

I’m doing my best to talk through my experiences and not just the pictures I took. One of the absolute biggest things of the whole week was meeting so many incredible people, and building relationships with people I already know and love. As Jackie said yesterday, next year I need to get a picture with every single person I hug. Sadly, I didn’t do that. But you can see me below with the darling Christy Tyler and my roommate for the week the effervescent Tamara Lockwood. LOVE them both. A huge person for me though that I don’t have a picture with is Kat Harris. Kat works with Mike Colon, you can see her blog here. I comment on her blog semi-frequently and I was really hoping to meet her. After hearing J*’s keynote I spotted her on the other side of the room and marched up to introduce myself. You guys, she KNEW WHO I WAS! And she hugged me. And she asked me about how I got started with wedding photography. And we talked about what an amazing God thing it was and how she ended up working with Mike. I don’t think I can put this in bold enough terms. Taking the time to really talk with people will always make a bigger impact than you think. When you show people that you value them, they will respect you. I only hope I can display this same genuine care in every aspect of my own life.

This next picture is from Christy that Amanda took for us. I would absolutely be remiss if I didn’t mention how incredibly wonderful it was to meet and get to spend time with these fabulous APW ladies: Emily, Katie, Christy, Allison. You are each so incredible. I can’t wait to spend more time with each of you!

Wednesday morning my iPhone charger died so I needed to run to the Apple store. This was incredible for my sanity (just getting outside and walking in the sunshine) and completely fortuitous timing. I had a mentoring session set up with Justin & Mary Marantz originally scheduled for Tuesday, we’d moved it to Wednesday, and Mary emailed while I was walking to Ceasar’s Palace Forum Shopppes to say they had an elopement come up for THAT NIGHT and could we reschedule for Thursday morning. Also, did I want to second shoot the wedding with them. I’m pretty sure my response was something like “YES AND YES!!!!!! And what perfect timing because I’m on my way to the Forum Shoppes now and I can get a wedding appropriate dress.” I’m that professional. I literally emailed her back about shopping. Clearly I wasn’t thinking straight.

This is from my walk :-)

I got a charger, found a dress as quickly as possible, and power walked back to the Signature to hear Jeff Jochum‘s keynote. I think I took more notes during his 35 minutes talking than I did during any of the two hour platform classes. He talked about our why in business and in life, about the state of the professional photography industry, taught us how to test the power of our positioning. I could go on and on.

From Jeff’s talk I sprinted up to the room to change and then to Justin and Mary’s platform room to help them set up. Mary’s talk was INCREDIBLE. Truly inspiring. She talked about dreaming big and doing bigger. And boy oh boy did I walk out of there with things to ponder. No time then though! I sprinted up to the room to change for the WEDDING and snapped this picture of the sunset before dashing out the door. I cannot thank Lauren enough for loaning me her 50mm and Joe for loaning me his shootsac.

The wedding was beautiful and I’m just showing this itty bitty Instagram sneak peek for now because I haven’t talked to Justin & Mary about using the pictures yet :-) It was SUCH an honor to be included in Ashley & Jeremy’s wedding.

Thursday morning I got up bright and early to meet Justin & Mary for my mentoring session. And let me just tell you, Mary rocked my world. We talked about my why, and my big hairy audacious goals. We talked about the business I want to build, and then we talked about achieving it. Big changes are coming, and I could not possibly be more thrilled! :-D

Please pardon the awful hilarity of this picture and just take it as documentation that I did in fact see the sunshine while in Vegas and that I am in fact friends with Lauren and Stacy. Also as a word of warning NOT to schedule a super late flight out…you’ll end up waiting for hours and hours and taking silly pictures like the one above.

A g&t on the flight and I was finally home.  Completely exhausted. And each day since I’ve felt just a little bit less like a truck ran over my body. It’s not gone yet, but I’m thinking by this weekend…hopefully.

I cannot wait for next year. (I’m bringing Wil with me for sure!)

Our Legal Wedding

Exactly one week before our “bigger” marriage celebration my father legally married us in our home here in Chicago. That was exactly one year ago today. 2/27/2011. No one else was present, just the three of us. We sat on the couch in our living room, said simple vows he’d written for us, and he prayed over our marriage and our life together.

With great joy, through the love of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, I, Emilia, take you Wilfried, to be my husband. I commit to building an everlasting, covenant relationship with you. I promise to fully commit myself to your spiritual wellbeing, and to submit to you daily. I promise to labor faithfully with you to fulfill the great commission. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay.

And he said the same to me ;-) We are both constantly submitting to EACH OTHER as Ephesians 5:21 says.

More details for those that are curious about how and why we did this: Initially we decided to get married this way because our wedding was in Texas the week later and they have funny rules about how long you have to be there with marriage license in hand before you can sign it. We would be in Mexico on our honeymoon before we could legally be married because of how we’d set up our travel plans. As this wouldn’t really work, we decided we liked the simpler idea of just getting legally married at home before heading down to Texas so it would be one less detail to worry about on our big day. People ask me if this made our “wedding” less special. For us it didn’t. We set up the wedding we wanted from the get go though and it wasn’t for anyone else. We paid for our wedding. And we only had 15 people there (total including “vendors”) anyway. As to whether or not I would recommend other couples do this? That would completely have to be on a couple by couple basis completely dependent upon your reasoning behind it and other wedding details. If not handled properly you can really easily piss off a lot of people doing this. But if it’s what you want, GO FOR IT :-)

So, to my love, my darling husband. I commit to you forever. And I’m so thrilled to be entering into our second year of marriage! Eek. XXXXOOOOO (And please for the love of goodness gracious hurry home safely from California. I miss you already)

Red Lipstick

I can’t believe it’s Thursday again! And this week’s purple box is too fun ;-) I love RED lipstick! I don’t really have a ton to say about this…and I feel kind of awkward but I’m just going to go ahead and post what feels like a million pictures of myself wearing red lipstick to show you how much I really love it.

Do you wear red lipstick? Do you opt for red red? Orange red? (This I still need to try, but I’ve heard it looks good on EVERYONE which I simply must test out) Pink red?

Somehow it feels old Hollywood glam fem to me, and I think that’s why I wear it. Also, since I’m not really a make-up every day kind of person (5 days a week I wear Chapstick and that’s it) I love being able to just quickly put on red lips and look immediately put together. Maybe that last bit is just in my head and my friends are letting me get away with it.

Okay, on to excessive amounts of pictures of me…. ladies read this as me begging you to start wearing red lipsticks for your engagement sessions/weddings ;-) then I could have used your pictures!

Just last weekend I put on red lipstick with my new “fur” jacket to go out with Wil! (please pardon iPhone quality)

before dinner at Next last Wednesday…

yep, I love red lipstick so much I wore it to my wedding! (wedding photo credits Arlina Rose)

Love him.

Okay now your turn! What’s your go-to make-up? Do people even wear lipstick anymore?

Flushmount Album Goodness (And the Importance of your Memories)

I can’t believe I’ve waited so long to share this goodness with you! Today I am thrilled to show off my very first sample album. I have more now, but since I ordered this once first I’m sharing it with you all first!  This is a 20 page 10″x10″ black leather album from KISS. And I adore it. This is my entry level flushmount album, and I’ve already sold more of this album than any others :-) It’s the perfect size I think if you don’t want a huge album, it has amazing thick pages that still magically lay flat, AND you get an adorable fabric slip cover with it!

I custom design the whole album, email it to you for approval (you can swap out a few pictures and have the option to add more pages) and then I send it off to print! It’s easy to include albums with booking, or decide after your wedding. And you get a discount when you order multiple copies! (Moms LOVE these.)

I’m definitely not a photographer who will push you into printing tons of things. But if you’re going to print one thing from your wedding, it should be an album. It is so much better to hold and feel the weight of these memories in your hands than clicking through a series of images on a computer screen. When you leave everything online it’s like leaving the negatives unprinted. Essentially without printing, you’re paying me for a really expensive facebook album. I kind of want to backspace that because I know it’s kind of harsh….but it’s true. I know printing isn’t cheap, but this has to be seen as an investment into your memories and family heirlooms. For you, your family, and future hypothetical children. Rant over, I love you guys. And like I said at the top, I don’t ever want to be salesy with this, I don’t want to push you. But I do believe your memories are more important than an online gallery could ever display.

Until tomorrow, XXOO

Next Restaurant El Bulli Menu

Last Wednesday Wil and I were so lucky to dine at Next for the El Bulli menu. I can’t tell you how hard it was to narrow down to these images! This menu we had 29 delectable courses. I’m not really a picky eater, but I definitely have foods I don’t prefer if you will…I cannot point to a single course that I didn’t think was so well balanced, well paired (ohhhh the drinks), and really frankly just downright delicious. I told this to our excellent server Josh, but I’ll tell you all too. I actually liked this menu better than our dinner at Alinea. Bam! Now you know I mean it. Okay enough chatting, on to the beautiful food…

After dinner we went down to the Office for one last drink ;-)

If this wasn’t enough pretty food goodness, you can head over here to the full gallery :-)

Happy Tuesday!

Dreaming Big

If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.

I’m just let that going to sink in for a second.

Are you letting your fear (and excuses) be more important than your dreams? Ugh. How convicting is that! I am SO guilty of this. Saying oh yeah…I’ll do that next year…. brushing things under the table. Coming into this week was kind of scary (and super exciting of course). I am currently in Las Vegas with 15,000 other wedding photographers. I have wanted to come to this conference (WPPI) since 2008. This year, I am actually here. I flew by myself to the other side of the country to be surrounded by people I have mostly only met online….pretty nerve wracking stuff. But I made it. I’m here. And I am SO EXCITED to hear so many people I admire speak, and to learn from them. In reality this week is easy compared to next week. Now that I’m here I have to challenge myself to be bold in introducing myself to strangers,  I have to take TONS of notes, and glean as much knowledge as possible. Next week is just up to me though. Next week I have to execute. I am saying this for myself but I want to say this loud and clear for all of you though too:

Achieving your dreams is up to you.  You can’t count on other people to give you permission. So here today in this space I am. I am giving you permission to chase your dreams. I am telling you to do one thing today that scares you. Be it personal or professional, it is up to no one but you.

Being the kind of risk averse person I am, I have to write lists first, and make notes. If this is you too, it’s ok. Actually write down what it is that you want to do. Be really specific. And then underneath it right down what you’re scared of. Rejection? Failure? Being laughed at? Then below that actually write what you think could be the most awful possible consequence. What’s the worst that can happen? How bad would it really be? Is it worse than where you are right now? I honestly doubt it is.

Now take a second and ponder. Think about some of the biggest, coolest things in your life. I don’t know about you, but for me, each thing on that list scared the crap out of me at one point. How freaked out were you to step out and do them? How rewarding is it to say you have done them now? Action trumps fear. What do you actually need to do to accomplish your dreams? Again, write this down. Be as specific as possible. Then write down what you think are your biggest obstacles. Are the people you’re spending the most time with helping your or hurting you? Are they daring you to dream bigger? Or are they sucking up your life and energy? What else do you need to re-evaluate?

As I look at the goals I posted this January, I know I’m tracking on some of them…but some I had already forgotten! And it’s only February. I know. So here’s to taking action, conquering fears, and putting yourself out there! The first step is the scariest. I’ve been reading people’s blog posts about how awesome WPPI is for YEARS and now I’m here thinking “what the heck took me so long?!”

I’m not going to post a pretty picture to close this out. I don’t want to give you the impression I think this is simple, and can easily be broken down into some cute catch phrase photoshopped onto a picture of a waterfall. I want you to to actually write down your dreams and goals. And then I want you to go accomplish them. And know that I am here, and I support you! I’m not an expert, but I love talking through things with people :-) Always feel free to email me.

And can you do me a favor? If you like this post at all, or really even if you hate it…. can you let me know your thoughts in the comments below? Thank you. Seriously.

Packing for Vegas

Sunday morning at 9am I am getting on a plane and flying to Las Vegas for WPPI and Showit United. I am really excited to meet so many fabulous people and learn so much about growing my business! But first things first. I have to pack! Eek. Okay. First thought is a freak out right?! Dressing to impress for five days straight?! Alright Emilia, you can do this. My next step is planning. Of course. I have written down all of my outfits so I don’t overpack! This is a real problem. If I don’t plan, I’m likely to end up with several suitcases of clothing for five days. This is my current plan:

Travel first. I always try to dress comfy/(slightly) sophisticated for traveling. I don’t want to be a schlub. But let’s face it, if I’m sitting on an airplane for several hours, I’m probably not wearing heels and a silk blouse. I almost always travel in good leather walking boots, with my lululemon leggings, a swoopy sweater, deep V tee, and a pashmina (I am somehow ALWAYS cold on planes). Other travel necessities are fashion magazines, the iPad, a notebook for journaling, and a million pens. (What’s in the picture below and where can I find it?)

***Please note with all of the Polyvore sets that I do own SOME of these items, others just look like what I’m taking because I couldn’t find the item I actually own.
Next I had to figure out what I want to bring with me camera gear wise and what I want to carry around during the day! My Kelly Moore bag, a huge notebook, Kor water bottle, and the my Mark ii are given. I always forget how dry it is in Vegas, so I’m remembering to pack hand cream this time, and since I forgot to schedule meal times for myself I will probably be living off of Kind & Clif bars. I am definitely bringing my 85L lens, but am still debating between the 35L and the 16-35L. The 35 is like my go-to love love lens, but she’s been cranky recently and the 16-35 would be AMAZING for some super Vegas-y wide angle shots but isn’t as good in low light….decisions decisions… (What’s in the picture below and where can I find it?)

I’m approaching the daytime like I would a client consult. Cute and put together/polished is what I’m going for. I love love this emerald green silk Ann Taylor blouse and haven’t worn it yet, I think it will go well with my leopard scarf, skinny jeans, and my Banana driving mocs. (What’s in the picture below and where can I find it?) Other days I’m wearing faux fur, heeled booties, red lipstick, and day dresses!

The evenings will be interesting. Sunday I know will be slightly more casual (a huge group of Showiteers are going to a delicious buffet), and Monday is vintage themed, which leaves Tuesday and Wednesday for more typical dressy/Vegas-y! I am super excited to wear my new Akira one-shoulder black dress (slightly more bling-y than the one pictured below) some black pumps, carry my Kate Spade gold clutch, and sip on g&t’s.  (What’s in the picture below and where can I find it?!)Okay now I’m off to pack, for real. What are you up to this weekend?

XXOO!

Dinner Parties Make My Heart Happy

Because you see…I love dinner and cooking and food and all things associated with parties…this combination brings me joy! My love of hosting people for dinner goes all the way back to childhood. We had family dinner every night but most nights weren’t just family. Whether it was friends of mine or my sister, or students of my parents, we added a chair or three to the table almost every night. I love the community my family created around our dinner table. And I definitely have that dream for Wil and myself (and our future family) as well. Just this week I was so lucky to both host and attend little dinner parties! Cindy & Julia  hosted Elizabeth Clayton, Christy Tyler, and myself for a FABULOUS dinner on Saturday (pictures on Instagram). And we hosted Tim & Bethany for dinner (you know it was good because we had lots of cheese!) and cocktails (Wil’s Instagram pic) Monday night.

What is so cool now is that I get to host friends (and clients sometimes) for dinner but some totally rad couples are opting for food centric wedding venues too! Intimate, restaurant/foodie weddings seem to me like the best imaginable dinner party celebration with all of the most important people in your life! And for those of you reading who are planning larger weddings, a LOT of this feeling can happen at your rehearsal dinner too (if you want it to, that is). [I will photograph your rehearsal dinner if you want me to ;-)]

Because photography is my business, and really I just love this subject….of course I have to share a few favorites from family/rehearsal dinners and restaurant/foodie wedding celebrations! :-)

 Happy Thursday!

[If you missed the past 5 Thursdays you can click on any of these links to read: I think dressing up is fun(with a vintage Vegas styleboard)! I could not survive without coffee (I am a Grande non-fat latte). I believe in nightcaps (with a DELICIOUS cocktail recipe). I am a list maker. And I love to read books for fun :-)]
