Going Green for 7

Green is probably my favorite color (if I had to pick one). I’m really excited about the fact that Emerald is the color of the year! Maybe I’ll see more green stones as engagement rings like mine?? Okay but really this month of 7 is all about eliminating waste. Which in my mind translates to helping the environment. I’m not going to lie, I’m a little bit really jealous of Jen (the book’s author). Because you see, she lives in Austin, Texas. They gardened for this month, started composting, regularly recycled, etc. And well…it’s 25 degrees here in Chicago right now. The trash truck dumps both the recycling bin and the trash bin into the same truck. Media month last month was kind of a disaster for me. And honestly, I’m just not feeling motivated about this month. Yes…it’s already the 7th and I leave on the 21st to travel with my mom. I have exactly two weeks from today left at home for this month, so this is what I’m doing.

1. I’m eliminating paper from my business and going online with everything I possibly can.

2. I’m taking 5 minute showers.

3. I’m taking my reusable bags with me to the grocery.

4. I’m trying to eat all the leftovers and not throw any food away.

5. I’m recycling my old electronics that don’t get used and I probably couldn’t sell.

6. I’m saving up for a Nest thermostat.

7. I’m taking a big trip of cardboard (aka amazon boxes) to the closest recycling center.

What are you some green things you do? This is an area I know I really need to grow in!

If you’d like to know more about why I’m trying to eliminate waste this month, you might want to start at the beginning of my 7 adventure.

7: Media Month for December

Okay, seriously! How is it December already?!? I am both excited for and terrified of media month. This is what I’m giving up:
»  Giving up watching TV by myself //I’m going to start this now that Wil is coming back from NYC today…I just didn’t have the self control when I was here alone…yes I know…it doesn’t make sense AND is terrible
»  Deleting the facebook, twitter and pinterest apps from my phone (only checking each when I’m already on the computer) //this is already done and I feel like a weight has been lifted. Wil sent me a fascinating article yesterday about going off Twitter and I’m kind of sold. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
»  Culling my google reader feed from 658 subscriptions to 300 or less. //down to 270 and feeling free!
»  Turning off all pop-up notifications on my phone (for email, etc.) //done and done. It feels amazing and I’m already reaching for my phone less!!
»  Charging my phone in a room other than my bedroom, setting an actual alarm clock and waking up to that. Not looking at or using my phone in bed. //this is also going to start tonight since Wil will be home.
And these last two are things I want to do…but am not sure how practical they are.
»  Carrying pen and paper everywhere.
»  Spending time reading a physical paper book daily, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
Here’s a link to all of my 7 related posts if you’re interested in why I’m giving up TV for the month ;-)
And lastly, because almost every post needs a picture…it’s Wil and I in Paris! Because I’ve been missing him this week and because I am SO excited to post Paris pictures next week!!!

7: Purging Possessions

//If you haven’t filled out the reader survey yet, please do! XXOO\\

I had hoped by now that I would have a pretty picture like this to show you of a million things we’ve eliminated from our home this month. The truth is, today is the 14th, we leave for a week long trip that will take us almost to the end of the month in six days. I need to get on it. The first week of this month we got rid of, sold, and donated over 75 things from our “junk” room which is now a music room. I have started a stack of my clothing and accessories to pass down that is also in the 50+ itens range (and I’m just getting started). I have two secret bags hidden of Wil’s old old clothing that I’m going to wait a few months to see if he misses (then I will ask him before donating). So that leaves us with less than 50 items to go. The thing is though that I’m kind of discouraged because I know that last 50 won’t really make a difference. Our home isn’t going to look any less cluttered. I don’t know how many things we’d have to get rid of to accomplish that.

Stuff isn’t important. It isn’t hard for me to part with things. It’s really hard for me to take the time to sort through which things are worth keeping. I don’t want to eliminate anything we’d have to buy again. I do want to say this though, I’m really excited to be noticing this for the first time. And I am happy to be moving my thought process about this stuff even if it doesn’t seem like I’m doing as much as I should be on the outside.

I have to give a HUGE props to Beth from 3UpAdventures who posted her list of 224 items in our 7 facebook group on November 2nd. She and her husband just had a crazy epic wedding and are leaving soon to go live in a van for a year and tour the US of A. If you like adventure, you should check her blog out :-)

7 Dresses: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess

Here we are! It’s the last day of the second month of my 7 challenge (I promise it’s worth reading back if you have no idea what I’m talking about). Well last time I checked in, I’d only worn five of my seven dresses for the month. That lasted until my birthday on the 20th. Crazy, right? I wore the dress up top on the left for my birthday (I purchased that dress from Caché in Vegas to shoot Jeremy & Ashley’s elopement in!)  and then last Monday (the 22nd) I woke up and was over this whole wearing the same things over and over and over bit and wanted to wear something new! Thankfully I still had one spot left, and last week was warm, so I picked this cute short-sleeved number (purchased at Club Monaco on our Miami trip).

As a general wrap-up I think this month went really well. It was WAY easier than giving up coffee last month, it didn’t inhibit anything about my lifestyle, and I don’t think anyone would have actually noticed if I didn’t tell them about it. I did cheat once, last Saturday night, I was just dying to wear jeans and a gold sweater out…so I called it a “Halloween” night to dress up, gave myself the one free pass, and had fun.

I just want to quickly remind both you and myself that a big part of why I’m doing this is because there are millions of people in this world who have even less than what I’m limiting myself to in these months. The amount of excess we live in is both astonishing and kind of disgusting. I’m going to bet right now that after eliminating all the things next month (210 to be exact) that our house won’t even look different. As I get further into this  I realize even more-so how much stuff we (both Wil and I, and we as a culture) really have and it’s appalling. I’m going to do my best to think about this even more, and go beyond what this challenge originally called for. I always find peace in simplicity, and since that’s a huge goal of mine for this year…let’s get to it! Happy Wednesday friends :-) XXOO

7 Dresses

I’m so sorry for not updating you all much sooner on my progress this month! Last month with food was hard…I guess part of me has been waiting for this month to feel difficult like that. But honestly, it hasn’t yet. I allowed myself seven dresses for the month…and thought I’d plan them all in advance. October totally snuck up on me though and I hadn’t planned! So I decided to just wear dresses until I’d worn seven of them and stick to those. I’ve intentionally worn dresses I knew I could wear alone, dress up or down, with heels or boots. And here’s the thing…today is the 11th and I’ve only worn these five so far. I’m absolutely wearing leggings and boots most of the time since it’s like 30something in the morning now…but with a coat I’m not cold! I thought I’d give myself a free day on my birthday (which I might still) but realistically I could still fit that dress in to my seven for the month. Crazy!

It’s funny because twice in my life I’ve intentionally done the opposite of this. I’ve worn every possible article of clothing I can without repeat to see how long I could go. I did this for the first couple months of my Junior year of high school and I did this when I started my corporate job right out of college. I can honestly say this month has been more fun so far than either of those! And I feel really good about it. I’m excited to finish this out and eliminate 210 items from our house next month :-D

The winner of the Starbucks giveaway is Vella Goebel! Send me your email and the Starbucks giftcard is on it’s way!!

»Since you asked ;-) the first dress is Ann Taylor LOFT from their current Fall collection, purple dress is from a little boutique in Bloomington that I got in college, grey sweater dress is GAP from last winter, the blue/green wrap dress is from Banana last year (this is the current version), and the last dress is Ralph Lauren«

Happy Thursday all! XXOO

**If you’re clueless as to why I would only be wearing seven things for the month or torture myself by giving up coffee last month, you can catch up right here!**

Cooooooooffee I’m Hooooome! & a Starbucks Giveaway

It is officially October first. The first day of the best month of the year! My birthday month. And the day I can drink coffee again. Me, dramatic? Psh no. If you’ve been following along with my 7 adventures, you know that today is the start of the clothes month. And yes, I am just wearing 7 dresses for the month, but that’s another blog post coming soon. What this really means is I CAN DRINK COFFEE AGAIN!!!! Yes, I am extremely excited. I plan on walking up to Starbucks shortly to order and consequently savor my grande nonfat latte. Here’s a rundown of how September went with my food goals.

1. Cutting coffee. Folks, I did it. I didn’t cheat once, even though I really want to almost every day. It was a TERRIBLE idea to start this in the middle of a double header wedding weekend, but somehow I chugged enough black tea and survived.

2. Eliminating alcohol (except the occasional glass of red wine). I didn’t ever go to the bar and order a gin and tonic. Buuuut I serve drinks with my meetings and viewings and if there’s champagne open….I’m such a sucker! I definitely wasn’t perfect here, but it was a good challenge and I still feel good about it.

3. Cutting coke/soda/pop. So my goal for this month is to drink 99% water and tea. Bam. Success. Honestly I thought this one would be easier….but since I had cut out coffee (including ICED coffee) I really wanted a diet coke in the afternoon for caffeine. Anyway, I didn’t cheat here either, and I think I’m permanently done with coke.

4. Eliminating anything with high fructose corn syrup. Yep! Done.

5. Not buying anything at the grocer with more than 7 ingredients.  :-( well….this one was hard. A lot harder than I thought it was going to be (should have researched more). It definitely made me read every single label before buying things (which I try to do anyway, but I guess some of my regular purchases had missed out on prior scrutinization). When I needed to buy something and only had options with 8 or more ingredients I would either make it fresh or pick the option with the least ingredients. Progress in the right direction. Also, I wish Whole Foods was closer to my house…this would be a whole lot easier there.

I really wanted to add a couple healthy habits too!

So 6. is making my own bread.  Yes yes yes! And it was so delicious! I’ve been making at least one loaf a week and I don’t plan to stop anytime soon. Here’s a yummy recipe for Apple Chunk Bread if you’re interested.

7. is to not let food in our house go bad for this month. I am not good at this. But I did WAY better than normal and actually ate all leftovers and tried to use everything before it went bad. Consequently I bought less at the grocery…which probably isn’t a bad thing. This is definitely something I plan to keep trying at :-)

Whew! Quick reflections, I wish I would have made one of my goals to drink more water. I’m happy I didn’t cheat with coffee or coke, but I really wish I had done better with the drinks and not letting stuff go bad. The good news is that this adventure isn’t about being perfect, it’s about eliminating excess and living with less.

To celebrate my drinking coffee again today!!!! I’m giving away a $25 Starbucks card to one lucky commenter. Tell me your drink of choice below, and I’ll announce the winner at the end of the week!

My Mama & Fresh Flowers

My mom came to visit! Though not technically just to see me (really to visit the Chinese consulate)…but still! It was SO good to see her. I just wish we had more time (and that I had remembered to take a picture to prove it ;-)). She was here Wednesday night when I had the local 7 ladies over for a little wine & apple cider. Kristine is one of the Chicago 7 girls, she’s a new friend and is SUCH a sweetheart, she brought me these gorgeous flowers from Pistil & Vine! Last night I had the pleasure of taking some new headshots for her (you can see a sneak peek at the bottom!). Aren’t these flowers seriously too pretty? What is it about having fresh flowers at home that makes everything better?

Isn’t she stunning?! And we get to work together on Sunday at Hollyn & Matt’s wedding! I can’t wait :-D

What are you up to this weekend? I have two weddings and am so excited to be taking Monday off! (though I’ll still blog ;-)) Have such a wonderful weekend!  XXOO

Foodie Friday» Apple Chunk Bread Recipe

Today is my seventh day of 7. I miss coffee more than I can begin to tell you. I daydream about it. I don’t just miss the caffeine, I miss the taste. I miss holding it in front of my nose and just breathing. Yes, I am insane. I’m sure this will pass. I hope to not be tortured for the remaining 23 days. One of the joys from my food list for the month though is baking bread! On Saturday I made one loaf of apple chunk bread. On Sunday I made another because the first was already almost gone. It’s so delicious. It’s yummy by itself fresh out of the maker. It’s tasty sliced with butter. It’s delightful with strawberry jam. It’s delicious with cinnamon & sugar sprinkled on top. It’s appetizing with peanut butter. It’s savory with nutella. And it is absolutely unbeatable with sliced cheddar melted on top. Oh? You want to make it? Here’s how! You’ll need 1 cup of milk, 3 tbs vegetable oil, 2 tbs sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1 1/2 tsp salt, 3 cups bread flour, 1 1/2 tsp yeast, 1-1 1/2 medium apples peeled & diced.

Add the ingredients to the bread maker in the order that I listed them, wet on bottom, dry on top. Scoop out a little spoon size bowl on top of the flour in the center, and put the yeast in there. Wait on the apples if you’re going to be spending any more time in the kitchen. If you can wait until the second kneading cycle, add the apples then. If your bread maker has only one kneading cycle, or if you’re not staying in the kitchen after you start the loaf, just go ahead and put them in at the beginning.

This makes a Medium loaf (1.5lbs I think) if you want the small or large recipe just email me and I’ll send it over :-) I plan on baking more bread this weekend, shooting Kris & Sabrina‘s wedding at Zed 451, and other fun things. What are you up to this weekend?

Mmmmmmmm. Happy Friday friends! XXOO

Of Pumpkin Spice Lattes and Giving Up Coffee

I read a book on our trip two weeks ago that inspired me. So I decided to go through the 7 journey myself. 7 months tackling 7 areas of excess. Tomorrow is the first day of the first month. Food. In the book, Jen (the author) picks only 7 foods to eat for the month. My goal for going through this is to create habits that hopefully flow into my normal life after these 7 months are over. Things that once I start will hopefully be sustainable (ish).

So I’ve decided to do my own thing and make a mix of adding and eliminating a total of 7 things for the month. First on my cut list is coffee. I walk to Starbucks twice a day. It’s not cheap. I say that I do it to get up and take a walk….so there’s no harm in just getting up and taking a walk right?! Here’s the huge dilemma though…the Pumpkin Spice Latte (my most favorite of all the coffee drinks) officially launches next week. In September. Writing this now I realize how dumb it sounds that I hated the idea of waiting an extra month until October for this latte…but I swear it’s special! Thankfully my sweet sweet barista totally broke the rules yesterday and gave me the Pumpkin Spice early. I could have kissed her.

Alright so here we go! I’m going to need your help keeping me accountable.

I am cutting: 1. coffee 2. alcohol (except the occasional glass of red wine) 3. Coke/soda/pop. So my goal for this month is to drink 99% water and tea.

Food wise I’m cutting 4. anything with high fructose corn syrup & 5. anything at the grocer with more than 7 ingredients (I find that after 7 they’re typically unreadable…whyyyy am I intentionally ingesting chemicals?!)

I really wanted to add a couple healthy habits too! So 6. is making my own bread. (I used to do this but I stopped when Wil cut carbs before the wedding and have somehow never picked it back up) and 7. is to not let food in our house go bad for this month. (Yes this is a real issue for me, it’s embarrassing.)

I asked for 6 women to partner with me and I am completely in awe that 23 women are IN and joining me for various months of this journey. We had the first Google+ hangout last night so everyone could meet. We have women from California to New Jersey, and even one in Canada! I am so honored to go through this journey with such incredible women! And I can’t wait to update you more along the way :-)

I hope you have a fantastic long weekend! I have Mallory & Matthew‘s wedding today, and Lauren & Stefan‘s wedding on Sunday. Monday we’re relaxing with friends! What are you up to?? :-D

7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess

I read this book on vacation last week. It changed my life. Jen Hatmaker, the author of 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess, speaks to so many things that I struggle with. I’ve tried to write a blog post about feeling overwhelmed and oversaturated and wanting a media diet no less than four times. I just couldn’t write a plan that I liked well enough to do it (what a lame excuse right?). She spends one month purging the crap from her life in each of  seven different areas.

I knew from the introduction that I was going to have to do this myself. Jen wrote a plan for exactly what I’ve been wanting to do but couldn’t find the right way to execute on my own. Because you see, I’m overwhelmed. And the 19 tabs I have open in my browser right now aren’t helping. Neither is the huge latte I just gulped down. It took me 8 minutes to get dressed this morning because I didn’t like any of my shoes (even though I have over 20 pair). This is just ridiculous.

I want peace and clarity in my life. I want less crap. I want to bless others. I don’t want facebook and twitter and google reader to have such a prominent placement in my habits and thought patterns. So I’m going to start next Saturday on the 1st of September. I’m going to eliminate seven types of foods that I regularly eat that I’d be better without (whether they’re bad for me or just represent excess in my life). I’m not going to do exactly what Jen did. I’m going to use her book as a guide.

Month 1: Food (September)

Month 2: Clothes (October)

Month 3: Possessions (November)

Month 4: Media (December)

Month 5: Waste (January)

Month 6: Spending (February)

Month 7: Stress (March)

I don’t want to do this alone though. I probably can’t do it alone. I need other women to go through this with me and guide me. I don’t expect everyone to have the same issues and want to purge in the same areas, so if you’re interested, please don’t feel like you’ll have to do every month. Ultimately I’d love to have a council of 7 women who each want to participate in at least two months and want to offer guidance and encouragement to the rest of the group even in the months where they aren’t participating.

So! Let me know what you think…and if you’re interested. I promise I’ll regularly update the blog with my progress! And if you want to do this with me, I will send a copy of the book to you either straight to your kindle or iDevice or two-day ship the paperback to you :-)
