Happy Friday! Pretty Flowers in Bloom

Yesterday in my walking around the neighborhood I noticed so many beautiful flowers in bloom….but I wasn’t carrying my camera! This morning we had to get up early because Wil has a board meeting, so I walked the long way to Starbucks for breakfast treats and brought along my macro lens so I could document and share the beauty. I hope you have a wonderful Friday!! I’ll be working all day, then quickly grocery shopping and cleaning because we decided yesterday to throw a last minute little birthday grilling party for Wil tonight! I hope you enjoy these flowers as much as I do! XXOO

I love remembering Matthew 6 when I see beautiful flowers. They’re a good reminder for me not to worry or be anxious.

We are loved and precious in his sight!

Happy Birthday Wil

Wil,

My love. On this, the anniversary of your birth (and of my moving to Chicago ;-) ) I don’t think I could possibly be any happier. I praise the Lord every day for the seemingly random and crazy facts of our lives that brought us both into this city and then into each others’ lives. You are my other half. I say this not just in the sweet, romantic way (that too) but because I know that I am who I am today because of you.

Thank you for being my cheerleader. My confidant. You bring a joy to my life that I had not known before.

Today, and hopefully every day, I celebrate you! I cannot wait to grow, learn, and spend the rest of our lives together.

Em

(Wil’s favorite picture of himself from the past year by the ever lovely Christy Tyler from my friend Julia’s wedding)

All Things Emilia Jane :: Heart Happy Friday

Wow. High five Friday y’all! I don’t know about for you…but this week has been insane around here and I don’t think it’s going to slow down anytime soon! Busy is good though, and there were too many pretty, heart happy things to be grateful for this week to each have their own post…so I decided to do a roundup! Please note, these are in no particular order.

» We started the week Monday with this hot little preview of Mallory & Matthew and I had the single most visits & pageviews I have EVER had on the blog in one day. Because I love you so much I’m going to include another little one here ;-)

»I received this BEAUTIFUL wedding invitation set! I LOVE being properly invited by my couples even though I’m obviously already attending!! Who doesn’t love gorgeous stationary?!

» Tuesday I am so lucky to have been featured on the Moment Junkie with this pictures from Liz & James wedding!

» I finally got ink for my stamp!!! Expect pretty mail & presents from me moving forward :-D

» Wednesday President Obama endorsed marriage equality!!! :-D And this tumblr about it just makes me smile, then laugh, and then smile again!

» This Pentatonix cover of blew my mind. Seriously watch/listen if you haven’t yet.

» Wednesday afternoon a rep from J Vineyards and Winery called me about my “Pop the Bubbly” post and asked to feature it on their facebook page. Wil & I LOVE their wine so of course this was a no brainer! Cheers to that too :-)

» Wil and I went to go see Avengers for a second time…and I think we like it even more now! Who doesn’t love a good date night?

» Thursday I tweeted this as my tumblr of the day: and I can’t help but check back over and over and over…because they’re all TOO TRUE!! Ladies and gentlemen, What Should We Call Wedding Photography.

» Last night I photographed the Illinois Technology Association’s annual cityLIGHTS Award’s Gala and met Wil for a nightcap at the Violet Hour after :-) Mmmm I love a good nightcap.

» And last but most certainly not least I woke up to this post of my pictures from Evan…. I can’t wait to get the files and do a post here for you all too!! Here’s just a little preview for now :-)

Date Night :: Avengers Style

We went to see Avengers for the first time on Sunday and we’ve been talking about it ever since! Well last night my meeting rescheduled, and I finished editing Mallory & Matthew‘s engagement session…and Wil and I had a date night to go see Avengers…again! I am so blessed to be married to this awesome man.
These pictures probably don’t need any explanation…but I’m going to give tags anyway :-) 1.Driving together in the car is my favorite. 2. The ICON theater (my favorite movie theater in Chicago) has awesome lights out front that change colors and are too fun not to take pictures of. 3 & 4. This theater also has “VIP” seating which just means you have access to a BAR and FOOD during the movie! Heck yeah g&t time. 5. Bacon popcorn! 6. If you see the movie stay alllllllll the way through allllllll the credits….because SCHWARMA! And it’s hilarious. 7. Behind the theater they have the most spectacular city view. 8. I need a spray tan and some sleep I think!

I hope you have fun Thursday day and a better Thursday night! Maybe skip out and do something fun with someone you love ;-) XXOO

Pop the Bubbly!

Sometimes, even though it’s a weeknight….you just need to drink something sparkling! We picked up this cuvée at the grocer over the weekend and simply couldn’t wait to taste test ;-) Here’s to celebrating the littles things in life…and the big ones…and everything in between! XXOO

PS this cuvée was delicious! Wil and I both give two thumbs up, especially for the price point.

//Speaking of celebrations! Go check out my feature on Moment Junkie today!!\\

What IS my camera bag?

Since I’ve been doing all of these posts on what goes IN the bag I thought it might be a good idea to show you how I’m toting all of these lenses and everything around! Let me lead with this though, I do not believe that I currently have the perfect camera bag solution. And frankly, I’m not 100% sure it exists. So PLEASE if you have a better solution I would love to hear it!

First up is the Kelly Moore “Libby” bag. She’s pretty, hold everything, and is basically a monster. She’s huge, really heavy, and not comfortable to carry. This picture also does not depict how deep she is. This bag sticks off your body by at least six inches. Right now I’m using her to old the gear and things that I’m not using at the moment during weddings. For example, she either stays in the trunk of my car with backup gear or under the DJ’s table with the lenses I want close by but don’t think I’ll actually need. Does that make sense? She LOOKS like really pretty leather, but that fabric is NOT bendable. I’m not sure if she just needs to be broken in or what…but for now we’re kind of fighting. Currently I use her to hold all of my gear at home. She is also AMAZING at transporting bottle of wine/booze for parties in her little “lens” compartments.
Next up is the “Union Street” ONA bag in black. I bought this for Wil as a THANK YOU for second shooting last year. I thought I might get to borrow it sometimes since he doesn’t always shoot with me….but this has become his permanent work bag. I would like to try it out for an engagement session sometime because I think it MIGHT be the right size and better distribute weight than the Kelly Moore bag we just talked about. Also, this strap looks WAY more comfortable. Anyway, Wil uses this when he shoots with me now.

For shooting weddings, I always use the Shootsac. It is neoprene bag with six lens compartments. If you’re using big lenses I would just recommend holding three with it. Please learn from my mistakes and don’t carry it around all day stuffed completely full. You will hurt your back.

So now I have to tell you how this practically plays out. Living in the city I can’t set bags down everywhere during a shoot…they would walk off. What I HONESTLY do most of the time since I don’t love love love the Libby bag (can you tell I’m still sad about this?) is I use a camera insert from this bag I ordered off Amazon last year and put it into my big purses that I prefer to carry. ONA carries a better camera insert and if I were starting over, I would buy this and use it for engagement and portrait sessions. For engagement sessions I normally carry the 35, the 85, and the 100. One of them is on my camera, and I only need a bag to hold my wallet/keys/phone and the other two lenses. And frankly, most of my purses can do this. I just throw a spare pashmina in as padding. I do this because I haven’t found a bag that I like that holds a camera body with lens on it and two-to-three extra lens spaces.

Now, for travel….I thought I would start using the Libby bag for traveling weddings…but the truth of the matter is that I probably won’t. I have this old extra large Kate Spade diaper bag that I LOVE and the shootsac fits into it fully packed. I bought the Kate Spade bag because it doesn’t look like a diaper bag, but it has the extra padding and is big enough to carry my laptop with other things…plus the bottle holders on each side are awesome for an umbrella and a water bottle :-) Silly, I know. But it just looks like a black bag. Shootsac now has a tote that can hold your camera and the Shootsac which also seems like it might be a good option. I’ll let you know if I hear any rave reviews.

Sooooo clearly I have things to say about this! Hopefully this has been helpful. Please please please feel free to offer advice and ask questions in the comments!!

Weekend/Life/Sanity Updates

I won’t lie, I needed this weekend. However much I’ve worked, it’s been worth it because I feel like I’m catching up. I did take fun breaks of course too ;-) I’m trying to figure out the best way to tell you what I’ve been up to…but I feel like it’s just about to be a hodge podge!

First, ranunculus are in season! So of course I had to get a pretty bouquet for our coffee table. Friday night we mixed drinks at home… as we tend to do. And Saturday we had so much fun down at the French Market! I’ve been reading this book and that thought really struck me: “When you are making art, you are stealing time.” Such an awesome blessing and reminder of how precious what I do is. I went on a pinning spree for inspiration for KT & Josh’s wedding where I’ll be a bridesmaid next summer. I am SO excited because we’re going to wear mismatched grey gowns!! EEK. And then…of course…what Sunday morning would be complete without some delicious, huge cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven?!

This weekend I finally updated all of the galleries on my site :-) I’m kind of embarrassed to say that I hadn’t touched them since the site went live back in November…but now they have received all new fun pictures and I promise to update it more frequently moving forward! Check out the “love” engagement sessions here!

Annnnd all new featured weddings!!

I’m SO excited to have added a BELOVED gallery to the site as well! So you can scroll through recent sessions here on the blog and see some favorites on the site!!

Also this weekend I edited Val & Theron’s engagement session! I’m so excited to share the full post with you tomorrow!

I also finished editing Sarah & Jeff’s wedding. I can’t wait to share this gorgeousness with you all soon ;-)

How was your weekend?! What were you up to?
